Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces Hands-Free Radiation Detection Technology

Analysis and Test Encyclopedia Network News August 20, 2015-Nowadays, terrorists use chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear weapons to commit crimes, which is more and more concerned and worried by the society, and there is an urgent need for innovative radiation detection technology. Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed a new radiation area monitoring technology that can help site security personnel eliminate safety hazards.

Security personnel, military teams and first responders can now use Thermo Fisher RadHalo Rapid Setup (RDP) and Fixed Monitor (FM) to address radiation threats. The high-sensitivity Thermo Fisher RadHalo RDP and FM spectral region displays provide the industry's first hands-free monitoring technology to determine and identify radiation dose rates from miles away with five different options.

According to the EPA, some early forms of radiation sickness have nonspecific symptoms—including nausea, fatigue, hair loss, skin burns, or decreased organ function (especially bone marrow)—and can eventually lead to death, and monitoring of critical areas can Reduce health hazards and aid recovery.

“Our family of radiation detectors now offers increased sensitivity and accuracy, while also adding remote operation capabilities to keep personnel out of hazardous areas,” said Scott Masiella, Spectroscopy Product Line Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We designed RadHalo to provide fast, autonomous radiation measurement performance to further reduce the risk of exposure to personnel."

RadHalo helps security personnel, military personnel, and emergency response teams identify and resolve radiation threats quickly and safely. The instrument can be configured in either fixed-area (permanent) or mobile (temporary) mode, enabling real-time data collection from security checkpoints to large public gatherings. In addition, RadHalo instruments can be wirelessly networked to expand the monitoring range, even across the entire city.

RadHalo RDP and RadHalo FM are designed to provide high sensitivity and accuracy even at very large ranges or at very low radiation dose rate levels. The instrument also has a rugged design for uninterrupted use in a variety of environments, including some extreme climatic conditions. The instrument is available in various configurations and can be adapted to any situation, such as monitoring of special events or responding to nuclear power accidents.

RadHalo instrument features include: 72-hour battery, full built-in recall, and multiple ways to view data over Wi-Fi, satellite, radio, cellular, and direct line, including mobile app, web interface, and Thermo Fisher Scientific command and control software.
