The In-Line Thickness Gauge for Thin Film Coatings is a near infrared photoelectric analyser that applies a fixed near infrared wavelength to test the water content of different products. It is an all-in-one instrument, with all the components necessary for continuous monitoring housed within the instrument, and depending on the wavelength it can test two compositions at the same time (e.g., the thickness of a coating of aqueous and oily adhesives).

The O-H bonds of water molecules absorb near-infrared radiation at several specific wavelengths. These absorbing and non-absorbing wavelengths are generated by three filters on a rotating filter disc inside the SIMV tester and are alternately reflected from the product surface to the internal optics. The electronic pulses converted from the optical signals are subjected to a ratiometric algorithm that calculates a positively proportional moisture content, which is then corrected for bias and span and transformed into a direct moisture content. A specially designed algorithm for filtering the reflected signal eliminates deviations caused by ageing optics and the reflective properties of different materials.
