Three Frequently Asked Questions about Moisture Meters

Oct 24, 2022

How do I maintain the moisture meter?

Moisture meters used for inspection are usually calibrated at the factory. To keep the meter in good working order:

Store the meter in a clean and dry place

Replace batteries and pins as needed. Running the hygrometer on a low battery may cause the hygrometer to lose its mark

Use biodegradable cleaners only on external parts to keep electrodes and meters clean

Which type of moisture meter is suitable for structures damaged by water?

For quick identification of wet areas on walls and floors, needleless flow meters are easy to use. They facilitate rapid testing of large areas and help you determine if further testing is required in certain locations.

On the other hand, a pin-type moisture meter is a great way to identify the exact location of water behind a wall, under a floor, or any other area that might hide moisture. The key to finding hidden moisture is to use electrodes with insulated contact pins. These pins only read at the uninsulated pin tips, allowing users to drive the pins into various depths of material and note the readings for each penetration level.

Can I use a moisture meter to check for pests and diseases?

Can. A few meter readings at critical locations of the structure will quickly indicate whether the area is safe or at risk of infestation. Pest control using a needle moisture meter is a great way to determine the exact infestation behind walls and ceilings. These meters do this by detecting moisture in areas where pests can grow and thrive without human interference. While fungi and molds start to grow in wood with about 20% moisture, some insects only grow in wood with 12% MC.
