Troubleshooting and Repair for Non-heating Electric Soldering Irons

(1) The electric soldering iron does not generate heat. Firstly, it is necessary to correctly install the heating element of the electric soldering iron

Some internal heating soldering irons, after replacing the soldering iron core with a new one, cannot raise the temperature even after being powered on for a long time, and cannot even melt tin, while the temperature of the handle is very high. When checking, if the voltage is normal, it is necessary to remove the soldering iron core and check whether the internal installation is reasonable. Because the inner heating type electric soldering iron core is the same length as the outer tube shell, the correct installation method is to align the end of the electric soldering iron core with the end of the outer tube, and not retract or protrude. Only by maintaining alignment can the heat be well transferred to the soldering iron tip. If the soldering iron core is retracted too much, the installation of the electric heating core tends towards the handle, which concentrates the heat on the handle end, and the heat on the soldering iron tip cannot reach the melting temperature.

(2) Attention should be paid to the wiring of the newly replaced soldering iron core when the soldering iron does not generate heat

The author found that one of the internal heating electric soldering iron cores burned out, and even after replacing several of them, the lifespan was not long. After careful observation and analysis, it was found that the lead wire of the newly replaced soldering iron core was too short. There was no room for the soldering iron core to expand and contract during hot and cold periods, which caused the internal fine resistance wire to be pulled apart when the soldering iron core was cold contracted after unplugging the plug. The correct replacement method is to make the lead wire longer, 1-2mm, which is less likely to burn out. But at the same time, precautions should be taken to prevent wire contact and short circuit faults caused by excessively long wire ends.

(3) If the soldering iron does not generate heat, it is not suitable to use the twisting method to repair broken heating wires

After the hot wire or root lead of an electric soldering iron is disconnected, it is generally reconnected by twisting. This method often causes ignition or thermal melting due to loose contacts and high contact resistance. A more efficient method is to remove the heating wire, first remove the oxide at the contact, then tightly twist it together. Then, place a small amount of broken glass and electric porcelain powder (6:1) around the joint. After installation, turn on the power for a few minutes, and the powder will melt and adhere to the contact, making it less prone to melting and more durable.

If you notice the three issues with the heating element of the electric soldering iron mentioned above, the problem of repairing the electric soldering iron is not significant. However, you should also pay attention to the maintenance of the soldering iron tip and the usage skills of the electric soldering iron. How to choose the heating element of the electric soldering iron before use. Only by considering comprehensively can we make our tools more convenient to use.

The common malfunction of electric soldering iron is the breakage of the heating wire. The simplest repair method is to twist the broken part together, but sparks often occur due to loose contacts after this connection, and the contacts break again shortly after use. There is a fast and reliable repair method: remove the heating wire from the cylinder, first remove the oxide near the fracture, and then tightly twist it. After twisting, sprinkle a small amount of mixed powder of glass and electric porcelain around the joint (ground them in a ratio of 6:1). After installation, power on for a few minutes, and the powder will melt and adhere to the joint. By repairing in this way, sparks will not appear at the contact point, and it is also more durable.
