What Are the Differences Between Laser and Ultrasonic Rangefinders?

In terms of accuracy, ultrasonic rangefinders provide centimeter-level measurement precision, while laser rangefinders deliver millimeter-level accuracy.

In terms of measuring range, the effective distance of ultrasonic rangefinders is generally within 80 meters. By contrast, handheld laser rangefinders can reach a maximum of 200 meters, and laser rangefinding telescopes are capable of measuring several hundred to several thousand meters or even farther. Nevertheless, the accuracy of laser telescopes is usually about one meter or tens of centimeters.

Ultrasonic rangefinders are prone to measurement errors. Since ultrasonic waves spread in a fan-shaped pattern, multiple obstacles in the detection area will generate complex reflected echoes and strong signal interference, leading to frequent misreadings. Laser rangefinders emit an extremely narrow laser beam; as long as the beam path is clear, external interference is nearly eliminated.

In terms of cost, ultrasonic rangefinders are priced from tens to hundreds of yuan. Laser rangefinders range from several hundred yuan to thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan, with prices varying greatly depending on accuracy and measuring distance.

Therefore, laser rangefinders have been widely adopted across numerous industries in daily life. Typical users and application scenarios include interior designers, surveyors, appraisers, power engineering field measurement, firefighters, land planners, real estate developers, stage construction, factory and warehouse layout, exhibition builders, forestry workers, fire prevention engineering, industrial conveying systems, traffic accident site investigation, crane operators, mapping services, software developers and data modeling. Handheld laser rangefinders have become essential tools in all these professional measurement fields.
