What is the difference between a laser range finder and a laser displacement sensor?

A laser rangefinder is an instrument that uses laser light to accurately measure the distance of a target. The laser displacement sensor can accurately measure the position and displacement of the measured object, and is mainly used to measure the displacement, thickness, vibration, distance and diameter of the object. Although both instruments have lasers, these are two completely different measuring instruments, and the difference between the two instruments is not a stark difference either in principle or in application.

First, the measurement principle is different.

The principle of operation of the laser range finder: First, the laser pulse is fired at the target, and then the laser is scattered in all directions after being reflected by the target. Some of the reflected light goes back to the sensor, where it is imaged, and then reaches the avalanche photodiode. A diode is an optical sensor with extended capabilities. Thus, he could sense weak light signals, record and process the time elapsed from the light pulse to when it was received, and policy the distance.

2. The operating principle of the laser displacement sensor: the probe emits a beam of laser light, which diffusely reflects on the surface of the measured object, and the reflected beam of light can reach the receiving device of the probe. The probe calculates the displacement by calculating the angle at which the laser beam is reflected. Therefore, this laser displacement sensor is also called a triangular reflection sensor, and its precision can reach nanometer level. Laser triangulation is suitable for high-precision, short-distance measurements. In current industrial robot applications, triangulation methods are often used.

Second, different application fields.

Laser rangefinders are mainly used for laser ranging and obstacle avoidance in emerging fields such as vehicle traffic monitoring, illegal monitoring of vehicles and pedestrians, drones, driverless cars, and autonomous driving.

2. The laser displacement sensor is mainly used to measure the displacement, flatness, thickness, vibration, distance, diameter and other geometric quantities of the detection object.
