Why is there a so-called "safe" and "unsafe" difference between laser rangefinders?

As the name implies, laser rangefinder is a measuring tool that uses laser as carrier to realize ranging function. At present, the hand-held laser rangefinder in the market mainly uses the following kinds of lasers: semiconductor laser with working wavelength of 905 nm and 1540 nm, and YAG laser with working wavelength of 1064 nm. The wavelength of 1064 nm is harmful to human skin and eyes, especially if the eyes are accidentally exposed to the laser with the wavelength of 1064 nm, the damage to the eyes may be permanent. Therefore, in foreign countries, hand-held laser rangefinders have completely banned 1064 nm lasers. In China, some manufacturers also produce 1064 nm laser rangefinder.

For 905 nm and 1540 nm laser rangefinders, we call them "safe". For the 1064 nm laser rangefinder, we call it "unsafe" because it is potentially harmful to human body.

Laser rangefinder, because the laser is used to measure the distance, and the pulsed laser beam is a monochromatic light source with very concentrated energy, so when using it, don't aim your eyes directly at the emitting port, and don't use the aiming telescope to observe the smooth reflecting surface, so as not to hurt people's eyes. Be sure to measure according to the safety operation specifications in the instrument manual. When measuring in the field, it is not allowed to point the instrument emission port directly at the sun to avoid burning the photosensitive element of the instrument.
