Why should pH meter electrodes be soaked in potassium chloride solution?

The pH meter electrode is a precision instrument, whose main function is to measure the acidity and alkalinity (pH value) of a solution. In order to ensure the accuracy of measurement and extend the service life of electrodes, appropriate maintenance and upkeep must be carried out on the electrodes. Soaking the pH meter electrode in potassium chloride (KCl) solution is an important maintenance measure. This article will explain in detail why pH meter electrodes need to be soaked in potassium chloride and explore the scientific principles of this process.

What is a pH meter electrode?

The pH meter electrode consists of a reference electrode and a glass electrode. The reference electrode usually contains an internal reference solution, while the glass electrode contains a glass film used to sense the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. The working principle of pH meter electrodes is based on electrochemical reactions. When the electrode is immersed in the measured solution, hydrogen ions in the solution react with the glass membrane to generate a potential difference. The pH meter calculates the pH value of the solution by measuring this potential difference.

The importance of soaking in potassium chloride

1. Maintain the concentration of the electrode reference solution: The reference electrode of a pH meter usually contains potassium chloride solution, and soaking in the potassium chloride solution is to maintain a balance of potassium chloride concentration inside and outside the reference electrode. If the electrode is not immersed in potassium chloride solution, the reference solution in the electrode may slowly seep out through the pores in the electrode, resulting in unstable concentration of the reference solution and affecting the accuracy of pH measurement.

2. Avoid electrode drying: The pH meter electrode, especially the glass film part, needs to be kept moist. There is a hydration layer in the glass film, which is crucial for electrode detection of hydrogen ions. If the electrode is exposed to air for a long time without being kept moist, the hydration layer may dry up, resulting in slow electrode response and inaccurate measurement. Soaking in potassium chloride solution can prevent electrode drying and maintain its sensitivity.

3. Reduce the deposition of impurities in electrodes: In daily use, electrodes may come into contact with various solutions that may contain various impurities. If potassium chloride solution immersion is not carried out regularly, these impurities may accumulate on the surface or inside of the electrode, affecting the measurement performance of the electrode. Potassium chloride solution can effectively remove these impurities and keep the electrode clean.

4. Extending the service life of electrodes: pH meter electrodes are consumables, and as the usage time increases, the sensitivity and accuracy of the electrodes will gradually decrease. By regularly soaking in potassium chloride solution, this process can be effectively delayed, extending the service life of the electrode and reducing the frequency of electrode replacement.
