Analysis of Automobile Noise Sources and How to Suppress the Main Noise Sources

The noise of a car is mainly divided into its own noise and external noise. The noise generated by self noise, external road friction, and air friction can be said to be on par. However, in terms of self noise, the operation of the engine is the main source of noise. As long as we understand the causes of noise generation, whether it is self noise or external noise, whether it is primary or secondary, we will manage and suppress it in a targeted manner.

When we drive, we all hope to have a quiet driving environment inside the car, either by listening to the radio or music. Sometimes things don't go as planned, as there are various types of noise inside our cars. Why is the noise inside our cars so loud? Where do they all come from?

Firstly, the noise comes from the car itself. As a mechanical vehicle, it requires various systems such as an engine, transmission system, braking system, etc. to form a complete vehicle, including the air conditioning system commonly used in summer. These systems generate mechanical noise to varying degrees during operation, which is proportional to speed. Most parts of a car, including the overall frame and sheet metal, are made of metal, which has a strong ability to transmit noise. Therefore, the noise from the car itself cannot be ignored.

Secondly, the noise from the outside of the vehicle, which is the friction between the ground and the tires, is called tire noise. Poor road conditions are the main reason for increased tire noise, and vehicle speed is also a contributing factor. The noise generated by the friction between air and vehicles is called aerodynamic noise. Pneumatic noise is divided into wind noise and cavity resonance, which are related to the manufacturing process of the vehicle, door sealing, and vehicle speed.

We understand the source of interior noise, so we can take targeted measures to eliminate such noise as much as possible. For example, when driving, especially at high speeds, try not to open the windows to reduce wind noise, do not turn on the air conditioning too much, and maintain a moderate speed to reduce noise. In addition, before buying a car, it is important to have some understanding of the assembly process. Generally, imported cars have better precision than domestic cars, and big brands have better performance than small brands. The higher the price, the better the quietness of the car interior.
