Application Modes of Infrared Thermometers and Infrared Thermal Imagers

English Translation

According to differences in detection functions, infrared radiometers are divided into two categories: infrared thermometers and infrared thermal imagers.

1. Infrared Thermometer

Also known as spot thermometers, infrared thermometers are advanced temperature measuring devices developed rapidly in recent years, designed to measure the temperature at a fixed point on an object. Featuring compact size, light weight, high sensitivity, fast response and simple operation, they are widely suitable for on-site temperature detection of equipment.Infrared radiation passes through a transmission or reflection optical system and is converted into alternating radiation by a modulator. After being received by an infrared detector, the signal is processed by an electronic amplifier to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, the temperature of the measured object is displayed on the indicator.

2. Thermal Imager

A thermal imager is a temperature measurement device that visualizes the planar and spatial temperature distribution of a target by utilizing the thermal radiation characteristics of objects. Based on infrared detectors, it adopts optical scanning to sequentially scan the entire measured area. After signal conversion, visible images reflecting the object shape and temperature field distribution are presented on the display. It is highly effective for analyzing the operating status of equipment and identifying potential faults. However, its high current cost limits widespread popularization.

Infrared radiation passes through scanning lenses made of infrared optical materials for focusing, and then undergoes continuous scanning via vertical and horizontal scanning prisms to cover the entire measured object within an instant field of view. The infrared beam output from the horizontal prism travels through a relay optical system composed of adjustable apertures, optical filters and other components, and is ultimately focused onto the infrared detector. The detector outputs an electrical signal proportional to the target radiation. This signal is amplified into a video signal and transmitted to the display through connecting cables, presenting adjustable black-and-white or color thermal images and quantitative thermal distribution graphics.
