Application of pH Meters in Aquaculture
The pH value (acidity or alkalinity) is an important indicator of water quality in fishing ponds, which not only directly affects the physiological activities of fish, but also indirectly affects fish by altering other physical, chemical, and biological factors in the water environment. Fish are suitable for growing in neutral or slightly alkaline water bodies with a pH value of 7.8-8.5. If the pH value is below 6 or above 10, it will cause harm to fish growth. Below is an introduction to the hazards of pH discomfort and its solutions.
(1) The hazards and solutions of low pH value. Low pH values and acidic water bodies can easily cause fish to be infected with parasitic diseases such as ciliate disease and flagellate disease; Secondly, the solubility of phosphate in water is affected, the decomposition rate of organic matter slows down, and the reproduction of natural feed slows down; Furthermore, fish gills will be corroded, the acidity of fish blood will increase, and their ability to utilize oxygen will decrease. Despite the high oxygen content in the water, it will still cause fish to lack oxygen and float, weaken their activity, greatly reduce the utilization rate of feed, and affect the normal growth of fish. The prevention methods include: firstly, draining the old water in the pool and injecting new water, repeating 2-3 times to adjust the pH value of the water. The second is to sprinkle quicklime water every half month, which can regulate the acidity and alkalinity of the water and prevent fish diseases.
(2) The hazards and solutions of high pH value. A high pH value can increase the toxicity of ammonia and provide conditions for blue-green algae blooms. A high pH value may also corrode the gill tissue of fish, causing a large number of deaths. There are four feasible methods to prevent the pH value of water from being too high: adjust it with about 0.5 kilograms of alum per acre of water; Or sprinkle with dilute hydrochloric acid or acetic acid; Or apply more organic fertilizers to adjust alkalinity; When preventing and treating fish diseases, quicklime should not be used, bleaching powder should be used instead.
