High levels of CO2 can cause lethargy and reduced weight gain in the flock, so it should be kept below 5,000ppm (ideally < 3,500ppm). High concentrations of ammonia will reduce feed conversion, reduce weight gain and increase susceptibility to disease. To maximize flock performance and maintain optimal flock health, ammonia concentrations must be maintained at 50% to 70%. Lower relative humidity tends to result in dusty houses and high heating costs, while higher relative humidity results in wet litter and high ammonia concentrations.

By using meters to monitor CO2, ammonia and relative humidity, the farm manager can accurately set the minimum ventilation fan, which can be maintained with just enough ventilation without excessive ventilation and increased heating costs normal air quality.
