Can transformers generate electromagnetic radiation?
Considering that high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities only generate extremely low power frequency electric fields and magnetic fields, their impact on the environment and human health can be completely ignored, the revised draft of the Hubei Province Radiation Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (draft) submitted to the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress for review yesterday clearly excludes high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities from the scope of regulations.
The Legal Work Committee of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress submitted a reference document on the environmental impact of high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities for the meeting yesterday, providing a detailed explanation of electromagnetic radiation. The reporter saw that the reference document integrated the opinions of experts from relevant symposiums organized by the Legal Affairs Office of the Provincial Government and the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, and combined with relevant domestic and foreign regulations, interpreted the concept of electromagnetic radiation and the impact of high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities on the environment. The Legal Work Committee of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Congress believes that some people oppose the construction of substations at their doorstep, mainly due to inadequate publicity and a lack of scientific understanding of high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities among some citizens.
According to the national standard "Electromagnetic Radiation Protection Regulations GB8702-88", electromagnetic radiation refers to the phenomenon of energy propagating through space in the form of electromagnetic waves, and its protection limit is applicable in the frequency range of 100 kHz to 300 kHz. The electromagnetic radiation managed by the environmental protection and health departments specifically refers to electromagnetic waves with high frequency bands and wavelengths ranging from 3000 meters to 1 millimeter, which are harmful to human health.
International authoritative institutions and experts believe that the wavelength transmitted by high-voltage transmission and transformation facilities is 6000 kilometers, which is 2000 times longer than the long wavelength of electromagnetic radiation. Taking the 500 kV ultra-high voltage line with a current high voltage level as an example, within a range of 40 to 50 meters, the radiation function per unit area is only about one thousandth of that of radio broadcasting.
