Components and Operating Procedures for Video Microscopes
A video microscope is a distinctive magnifying device, differing from other optical instruments. Conventional optical microscopes are observed directly through the eyepiece with the human eye, while video microscopes work in a different way. Video microscopes are sometimes loosely categorized as electron microscopes, though this naming varies. Professionals generally refer to it as a video microscope for accuracy, whereas laypeople may call it an electron microscope.
First, let us introduce the structure of a video microscope. Its main components include the microscope lens, universal stand and camera. Besides these core parts, there are auxiliary accessories such as the microscope light source and connecting cables. The microscope lens acts as the core component of the video microscope and is relatively costly. High‑performance lenses used to be mostly imported. However, with rapid domestic economic development, the performance of domestic lenses has gradually reached a comparable international level. The universal stand supports the microscope lens, monitor and camera. It consists of a base iron plate, stainless steel support tubes, one bracket for the monitor and another bracket for the microscope and camera. These form the basic structure of the video microscope.
The operation of a video microscope can be divided into four main steps:
① Prepare the major components and assemble the universal stand. Note that the brackets for the lens and camera are installed at the lower position, while the monitor bracket is mounted on the upper part for convenient observation.
② Fit the lens onto the universal stand and secure it in the retaining ring. The lens is fragile, so handle it with extreme care during installation. Then mount the camera onto the lens by aligning and inserting the matching interface. This step is critical and requires careful operation.
③ After installing the stand and lens, fix the monitor in place and connect all required cables.
④ If the illumination is insufficient after completing the above steps, install the light source to provide adequate lighting for specimen observation.
