Correct Operation of Handheld Infrared Thermometers

Handheld infrared thermometers are now widely used. But how to use an infrared thermometer correctly? The following is an introduction.

When a handheld infrared thermometer measures the temperature of an object, align the thermometer with the target, ensure that the distance-to-spot ratio meets the requirements - do not get too close or too far away. Then press the trigger button, and the measured temperature data will be displayed on the instrument's LCD screen. There are five important points to remember when using an infrared thermometer:

① Ambient temperature. If the infrared thermometer is suddenly exposed to an ambient temperature difference of 20°C or higher, allow the instrument 20 minutes to adapt to the new ambient temperature.

② Measure only the surface temperature of objects. Infrared thermometers cannot measure the internal temperature of objects.

③ Pay attention to ambient conditions. Steam, dust, smoke and other substances can block the optical system of the instrument and affect temperature measurement.

④ Locate hot spots. To find a hot spot, aim the instrument at the target, then scan up and down across the target until the hot spot is identified.

⑤ Handheld infrared thermometers cannot measure temperature through glass. Glass has special reflection and transmission properties and will not allow accurate temperature readings. However, temperature measurement can be taken through infrared windows. Infrared thermometers are not suitable for measuring the temperature of bright or polished metal surfaces (stainless steel, aluminum, etc.).
