DC Power Supply Ripple Measurement Principle

 

Definition of DC power ripple
DC power ripple refers to the AC component in the output voltage of a DC power supply, usually represented by peak to peak value (Vpp) or effective value (RMS). The magnitude of ripple is related to factors such as the stability of the power supply, load changes, and parameters of internal components of the power supply.


The causes of ripple in DC power supply
The main reasons for the generation of DC power ripple are as follows:


(1) The nonlinear characteristics of internal components of the power supply, such as rectifier diodes, switch tubes, etc., can lead to the generation of AC components in the output voltage.


(2) Switching frequency of power supply: The switching frequency of switching power supply is relatively high, which is prone to high-frequency ripple.


(3) Load variation of power supply: Load variation can cause fluctuations in the output voltage of the power supply, resulting in ripple.


(4) The filtering circuit of the power supply: Improper design of the filtering circuit or mismatched component parameters can result in ineffective filtering of ripple.


The Significance of Measuring Ripple in DC Power Supply
Measuring the ripple of DC power supply is of great significance for ensuring the normal operation of electronic devices and improving the quality of power supply. By measuring ripple, it is possible to:


(1) Evaluate the stability of the power supply: The size of the ripple can reflect the stability of the power supply, and the smaller the ripple, the better the stability of the power supply.


(2) Diagnosing power supply faults: Abnormal changes in ripple may be a sign of power supply faults, and measuring ripple can detect and eliminate faults in a timely manner.
