Detailed Introduction to the Polarizer of the Polarizing Microscope

The main function of the polarizer of a polarizing microscope is to convert unpolarized natural light into polarized light, allowing light vibrating perpendicular to the electric field to pass through so that the LCD panel can display images normally. The core function of a polarizer is to turn incident natural light into polarized light. A polarizer is a sheet-shaped optical functional material used to generate and detect polarized light, and it is a critical component affecting the display performance of LCD screens.

A polarizer polarizes unpolarized natural light into polarized light. Combined with the twisting characteristics of liquid crystal molecules, it controls light transmission, improves transmittance and viewing angle, and realizes anti-glare and other functions. It is an extremely important upstream material for display panels, accounting for approximately 10% of the raw material cost of LCD TVs.

Classification of polarizers by function: transmissive polarizers, reflective polarizers, transflective polarizers, and compensatory polarizers.

Classification of polarizers by dyeing method:

Iodine-based polarizers: They can easily achieve high transmittance and high polarization degree, but have poor resistance to high temperature and high humidity.

Dye-based polarizers: It is difficult for them to obtain high transmittance and high polarization degree, but they feature good resistance to high temperature and high humidity.

Composition of polarizers Early polarizers mainly consisted of a central PVA film that generates polarized light, laminated with TAV protective films on both sides. To facilitate application and achieve different optical effects, polarizer manufacturers coat pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides and attach release films as required by LCD manufacturers. This type is the common standard TN fully transmissive polarizer. If one release film is removed and a reflective film is laminated instead, a conventional reflective polarizer is formed.

High-temperature and moisture-resistant pressure-sensitive adhesive is adopted. Special glue treatment on the PVA film (for dye-series products) produces wide-temperature-range polarizers. Adding UV-blocking ingredients to the pressure-sensitive adhesive yields UV-resistant polarizers. Laminating a birefringent optical compensation film onto the base transmissive sheet produces polarizers for STN displays. Laminating an optical light-turning film creates wide-view or narrow-view polarizers. Coloring the pressure-sensitive adhesive, PVA film or TAC film results in colored polarizers. In fact, as new liquid crystal display products are continuously developed, more and more types of polarizers have emerged.
