Expanded Applications of Microscopes in Biology
I. Botany
(1) Electron microscopy is applied to observe the ultrastructure of plant tissues, explore their growth and development mechanisms, and reveal the relationship between plant structure and function. It provides a theoretical basis for improving plant functions and crop yield. Olympus microscopes are used here.(2) Observe the variation of plant organs during growth to provide a basis for optimizing cultivation techniques.(3) Observe the characteristics of plant pollen, pericarp, seed coat, leaf epidermis and other structures, providing scientific evidence for palynology and plant taxonomy.
II. Entomology
(1) By observing insect organs and tissues, we can better understand their roles in physiological functions. It lays a foundation for exploring various life phenomena and living rules, and provides theoretical support for pest control and eradication.(2) SEM is used to observe the microscopic features of insects, which offers important references for insect taxonomy, insect biology, and pest prediction and early warning.
III. Microbiology
(1) Observe and study the ultrastructure of viruses, mycoplasmas and other microbes, investigate viral structure, growth and development. It also supplies technical means for discovering and identifying new viruses and virus-like pathogens.(2) Study the morphological characteristics of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, etc. It is of great significance for their classification, genus identification and pathogen judgment. In particular, further insights can be obtained on bacterial activity, spore germination and host invasion.
IV. Pathology
Olympus microscopes are used to study ultrastructural pathological changes in cells, tissues and organs of plants, animals and insects, offering scientific support for disease prevention and treatment. Electron microscopy autoradiography and other electron microscopy techniques are widely adopted.
V. Wood Science
(1) SEM is used to study the ultrastructure of wood, providing evidence for wood species identification and classification. It also supplies a basis for researching the relationship between wood structure, growth environment and utilization value.(2) SEM is applied to investigate the properties of wood modification, weathering and decay, providing new references for wood processing and comprehensive utilization.(3) TEM is adopted for further wood classification, which provides theoretical support for optimizing processing technologies and adjusting growth environments.
