Factors to consider before using a gas detector
I. Measuring the safety level of the plant
Before entering a confined space and/or container, check that the work area is safe and whether arrangements need to be made, e.g. a set of ventilation equipment.
Are there any toxic or explosive substances in the area, and if so, what are they? What is the oxygen level there? These two questions can be answered if the safety level measurement can be carried out correctly. If the container has been completely emptied, it still plays an important role in carrying out a risk assessment, regardless of the presence of gaseous releasing contaminants or the entry of hazardous substances.
Measuring plant safety levels requires expertise in selecting and applying the right measurement method. Again, the results can only be reliably assessed with the right expertise; good safety training and preparation are also important.
II. The main hazards in restricted spaces are due to:
Formation and build-up of explosive substances ("flammable gas" measurements)
Oxygen deficiency or excess ("Oxygen" measurement)
Formation and concentration of toxic substances ("toxic and hazardous gases" measurement).
Measurement of gas and oxygen are mandatory.
An oxygen concentration of less than 19.0 vol % in a restricted area indicates an asphyxiation hazard.
An oxygen concentration of more than 23.0 vol % indicates that all substances are susceptible to fire and that the substance has a high temperature, including protective clothing, which is resistant to fire under normal circumstances.
