Gas Detector Applications for Underground Mine Sites

A gas detector is a sensor device used to measure gas composition and concentration. For workplaces with hidden safety hazards such as mines, it greatly reduces the risk of potential mine accidents.
Regarding the development and application of gas detectors, research reports published by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration indicate that many fatal confined‑space accidents are associated with gas compositions within confined spaces. These hazardous gas components may already exist before workers enter confined spaces, or may be generated by activities carried out inside. The vast majority of accidents stem from the absence of hazardous‑gas testing prior to entry and during work inside confined spaces. All these studies demonstrate the critical importance of hazardous‑gas detectors at every stage of confined‑space entry operations.
Gas compositions in mines present multiple types of hazards. Toxic gases encountered include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and others, alongside oxygen‑deficiency conditions. Under certain circumstances, methane may accumulate to explosive concentrations. Since methane has no warning properties, it may build up to an immediately explosive level before workers perceive any danger. Any ignition source, such as miners' lamps, can trigger an explosion.
