Guide to Calculating the Actual Magnification of a Microscope

Many customers call to ask what the maximum magnification of a microscope is. Below is a simple explanation for your reference. The calculation formula is as follows: Objective magnification × (Diagonal of computer screen / Target size of CCD or CMOS) = System magnification. Common objective magnifications include 5×, 10×, 20×, 40×, 60×, 80× and 100×. Custom selection is also available according to customer requirements.

Computer screens are usually specified in inches. Multiply the value by 25.4 to convert it into millimeters. The diagonal length of a computer screen is measured in inches. For example, a 17-inch screen is converted by multiplying by 25.4, and the resulting unit is mm. 1 inch = 25.4 mm.

Common target sizes of CCD or CMOS sensors are 1, 2/3, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 inch. Digital microscopes generally adopt a trinocular port fitted with a CCD or CMOS sensor. If you already own a traditional binocular stereomicroscope, metallurgical microscope or similar instrument, how can you convert it into a digital system? The upgrade allows you to retain your existing equipment, reduce costs, observe samples directly on a computer screen and relieve eye strain. This modification is closely related to the target size of the CCD or CMOS sensor, which directly determines the magnification of the digital microscope.
