How to Measure the Goodness of a Temperature Probe with a Multimeter?

Temperature probes are essential in numerous industrial production, scientific experiments, and daily life scenarios. It is called a temperature scout, which can accurately perceive the ambient temperature and provide feedback on relevant information. However, when the temperature probe malfunctions, it may lead to a series of problems. So, how can we measure the quality of temperature probes?

1, Appearance inspection
Firstly, conduct a simple visual inspection. Carefully observe whether the casing of the temperature probe is damaged or deformed. If there are cracks in the casing of the probe, it may expose the sensitive components inside to the external environment, thereby affecting their normal operation. At the same time, check if there are any signs of damage, breakage, or aging on the wires of the probe. Because once there is a problem with the wire, it may cause signal transmission interruption or inaccuracy.

2, Measure the resistance value with a multimeter
Using a multimeter to measure the resistance value of a temperature probe is a commonly used method. The normal range of resistance values for different types of temperature probes varies. For example, common thermal resistance temperature probes have a relatively fixed resistance value at room temperature. We can refer to the product manual to obtain the standard resistance value of the temperature probe at the current ambient temperature. Then, adjust the multimeter to the appropriate resistance level and connect the probes to both ends of the temperature probe. If the measured resistance value differs significantly from the standard value, it is likely that there is a problem with this temperature probe.

3, Measure output signal
For some temperature probes that can output electrical signals, we can use professional signal measuring instruments to detect their output signals. Under normal working conditions, the temperature probe will output corresponding electrical signals as the temperature changes. We can place the temperature probe in an environment with a known temperature and measure its output electrical signal. If the output signal deviates significantly from the theoretical value, or if there is no output signal at all, then the temperature probe may have been damaged.
To measure the quality of a temperature probe, you can consider starting from the above aspects.
