How to use a multimeter to measure resistance and read the resistance value

 

When repairing electronic circuit boards, the resistance components on the circuit board account for about 50% of the entire electronic component. If there is a fault in the circuit, the resistance components are one of the components we need to test.


So how to use a multimeter to measure resistance and read the resistance value? Below, I will talk about this issue for everyone. Before measuring resistance, it is best to perform two zero adjustments: one is the mechanical zero adjustment of the pointer multimeter; The second is to zero the ohms. After completing these two steps, you can choose the appropriate resistance ratio range for resistance measurement. Due to the uneven scale of the multimeter's resistance range, it is generally best to keep the pointer scale in the sparser part of the scale when selecting the ratio range, and the closer the pointer is to the middle position of the scale, the more accurate it is. I suggest it's best to point the pointer at 1/3 to 2/3 of the scale.


Reading method

The method of reading a multimeter is not complicated, that is, the reading of the meter head is in multiplication, which is the resistance value of the measured resistance. For example, when measuring a resistance of 47 ohms, adjust the range to the "Rx10" ohm range. At this point, the pointer of the multimeter points to position 4.7, and the final reading is 47 ohms for 4.7x10. If a larger resistance range can be selected for measuring large resistance, such as Rx1k or Rx10K, the method for reading resistance values is the same for both.

1. Range

Whether it is a digital multimeter or a pointer type multimeter, it is important to pay attention to the range when using it. Choosing the correct gear during measurement can protect the safety of the multimeter and ensure the accuracy of the measurement values. Generally, when measuring, a large number of instruments are selected to gradually achieve accuracy.


For example, when the voltage value is about 220V for single-phase electricity, but cannot be determined, it is necessary to adjust the measurement gear to 500V, or even 1000V, so that a large enough range can ensure that the pointer does not overshoot during measurement and protect the safety of the multimeter.
