Minor Details and Notes for Microscope Operation
Stereomicroscopes are widely applied in agriculture, industry and scientific research institutes thanks to their numerous advantages. Minor faults occurring during use can be troubleshooted according to actual conditions. Common malfunctions are listed below:
Blurry field of view or contaminants in the view. Possible causes include dirt on the specimen, eyepiece surface, objective lens surface or stage plate surface. Solution: Clean the dirt on the specimen, eyepiece, objective lens and stage plate as needed.
Non‑coincident double images. This may result from incorrect interpupillary distance adjustment - adjust the interpupillary distance accordingly. It may also be caused by improper diopter adjustment; readjust the diopter. Another cause is mismatched magnification of the left and right eyepieces. Inspect the eyepieces and reinstall a pair of eyepieces with identical magnification.
Blurry image: Clean the objective lens if its surface is contaminated. Unclear image during zooming: This is usually due to incorrect diopter setting or improper focusing. Readjust the diopter and refocus.
Frequent bulb burnout or flickering light: Possible reasons include excessive mains voltage, an aging bulb or loose wiring connections. Carefully check the supply voltage and cable connections of the microscope. If the connections are secure, replace the worn‑out bulb.
Pre‑use adjustments for a stereomicroscope mainly include focusing, diopter adjustment, interpupillary distance adjustment and bulb replacement. These steps are explained separately below.
