Selection Tips for Microscope Magnification in Laboratories

A microscope is an optical instrument composed of one lens or a combination of several lenses. It marks humanity's entry into the atomic age, and it is mainly used to magnify tiny objects so that they can be seen by the naked human eye.

During operation, insufficient magnification will fail to meet observation requirements, while excessively high magnification is also inappropriate. How can we select a biological microscope with a suitable magnification? The following guidelines offer practical solutions.

① First, determine the required magnification according to the specimen to be observed. Different specimens require different magnifications. Therefore, select a matched combination of eyepiece and objective lens with proper magnification tailored to the sample.

② Second, video observation. If the optical magnification is insufficient for video viewing, electronic magnification can make up for it. Images captured under the microscope can be saved as data files for later retrieval.

③ Finally, illumination. As we know, lighting conditions greatly affect the image quality of observed specimens. When selecting the illumination system, the microscope magnification shall be determined based on the characteristics of the specimen. Most stereomicroscopes on the market are equipped with built-in transmitted light function, and oblique illumination may not satisfy your lighting demands. For this reason, alternative illumination light sources are available.

These are key considerations for microscope magnification selection. Ultimately, the choice of microscope should be determined primarily by the specimen you intend to observe.
