Multimeter Voltage Measurement Techniques

 

1. Choose the appropriate range
Before measuring DC voltage, the first step is to choose a suitable range. Most multimeters have multiple ranges to choose from, such as 2V, 20V, 200V, etc. If you are unsure about the magnitude of the measured voltage, you can start from the maximum range and gradually reduce the range as needed.

 

2. Connect the probe
Connect the red probe (positive pole) to the positive pole of the circuit and the black probe (negative pole) to the negative pole of the circuit. Ensure good contact of the probe to avoid inaccurate readings.

 

3. Read the measurement results
Turn on the power to the circuit and observe the display screen of the multimeter. If the reading is within the selected range, then the measurement result is accurate. If the reading is below the minimum range, it may be necessary to reduce the range; If the reading exceeds the maximum range, the range needs to be increased.

 

4. Disconnect the connection
After the measurement is completed, turn off the power to the circuit and disconnect the probe of the multimeter.

 

Measure AC voltage
1. Choose the appropriate range
Similar to measuring DC voltage, the first step is to select the appropriate range. For AC voltage, multimeters usually have a dedicated AC range.

 

2. Connect the probe
For AC voltage measurement, usually only one probe is needed. Connect the probe to either end of the circuit, and connect the other end of the multimeter to the ground wire or the neutral wire of the circuit.

 

3. Read the measurement results
Turn on the power to the circuit and observe the display screen of the multimeter. The reading will display the effective value (RMS) of the AC voltage.

 

4. Disconnect the connection
After the measurement is completed, turn off the power to the circuit and disconnect the probe of the multimeter.
