The red objective of an optical microscope indicates a magnification of 4x, yellow for 10x, blue for 40x, and white for 100x. Multiply the eyepiece magnification by the objective lens magnification to get the total magnification of the microscope.


Optical microscope in the upper line of the number "10" and "4" that the magnification of the objective lens for 10 times or 4 times, where the magnification is not the magnification of the area, but refers to the magnification of the length or width of the image, and the total microscope magnification is equal to the product of the magnification of the objective lens and the eyepiece. And the total magnification of the microscope is equal to the product of the magnification of the objective lens and the eyepiece, and the magnification of the objective lens is directly proportional to its length. The greater the magnification of the objective lens, the longer the objective lens.


Parameters of a light microscope
The working distance of the objective lens of an optical microscope is related to the focal length of the objective lens; the longer the focal length of the objective lens, the lower the magnification and the longer its working distance. Example: The 10x objective lens is labelled 10/0.25 and 160/0.17, where 10 is the magnification of the objective lens. 0.25 is the numerical aperture; 160 is the length of the barrel (in mm); and 0.17 is the standard thickness of the coverslip (in mm).


The effective working distance of the 10x objective lens is 6.5mm, and the effective working distance of the 40x objective lens is 0.48mm. The role of the objective lens is to magnify the specimen for the first time, it is the most important part of the microscope to determine the performance of the resolution of the high and low.


When the objective lens has been resolved clearly the fine structure, if not through the eyepiece re-enlarged, not up to the size of the human eye can distinguish, it will not be clear; but the objective lens can not distinguish the fine structure, although through the high magnification eyepiece re-enlarged, but also can not see clearly, so the eyepiece can only play a role in magnification, will not improve the resolution of the microscope.
