Selection Principles and Applications of Hazardous Gas Detectors

Hazardous gas detection and alarm instruments are special safety and hygiene detectors. They are used to measure the concentration of combustible or toxic gases and vapors in the air at chemical work sites or inside equipment, and trigger an alarm when concentrations exceed limits. Three principles shall be followed when selecting gas detectors:

First, define the detection purpose to select the instrument type. Hazardous gas detection generally has two purposes: explosion prevention and toxic hazard monitoring. Explosion prevention means measuring combustible gas concentration in hazardous areas and alarming upon over-limit values to avoid explosions. Toxic hazard monitoring refers to measuring toxic gas concentration in hazardous areas and triggering alarms to prevent personnel poisoning.

Second, clarify the application to choose the instrument category. Fixed detection and alarm instruments shall be adopted for long-term leakage monitoring at production or storage stations. Portable instruments are suitable for maintenance inspection, emergency detection, confined-space entry detection and patrol inspection.

Finally, confirm the target gas and select the optimal model. The detection principle of the instrument must adapt to the site environment.

Applications of Hazardous Gas Detection and Alarm Instruments

Hazardous gas detection and alarm instruments are special safety and hygiene detectors for measuring combustible or toxic gas and vapor concentrations in chemical work sites or equipment, with over-limit alarming functions. Oxygen deficiency detectors also fall into this category.

Hazardous gas detection in hazardous chemical sites mainly covers the following scenarios:

● Leakage detection: On-site leakage detection and alarming for hazardous gases or liquid vapors from equipment and pipelines, as well as regular leak checking during equipment operation.

● Maintenance detection: Measurement of residual hazardous gases or liquid vapors after equipment purging before maintenance, which is especially critical prior to hot work.

● Emergency detection: Hazardous gas or vapor testing for occupational safety and health during abnormal production conditions or accident handling.

● Entry detection: Gas testing before personnel enter isolated operation rooms, sewers, cable trenches or confined equipment in hazardous areas.

● Patrol detection: Hazardous gas and vapor measurement during routine safety and hygiene inspections.
