There are two ways to measure current with a digital multimeter.

The first method is to use the digital multimeter directly for current measurement, which requires connecting the multimeter in series with the circuit under test, which means disconnecting the circuit and forming a complete circuit with the test leads of the digital multimeter. In this way, the entire circuit current flows through the digital multimeter's circuit.

Another indirect way to measure current with a digital multimeter is to use a multimeter accessory called a current probe. Clamp the probe out of the conductor to measure high currents greater than 10A without breaking the circuit.
