What are the reasons for the temperature measurement errors of infrared thermometers?

 

Non contact infrared radiation thermometers are divided into industrial and medical types. When measuring human body temperature, medical infrared thermometers, infrared ear thermometers, and infrared surface temperature detectors should be used because their measurement range is narrow, resolution is high, and error is small. On the contrary, industrial infrared thermometers have a wide measurement range, low resolution, and large errors. But currently, many SARS prevention checkpoints still use industrial infrared thermometers to measure human body temperature. Therefore, it can only serve as a screening tool initially, and medical thermometers must be used to determine and exclude suspected fever objects.


Nowadays, many thermometers have the problem of large errors. According to relevant personnel, the existing infrared thermometers are modified from industrial thermometers and can only measure the surface temperature of the forehead, not the armpit temperature. The surface temperature of the forehead is not only lower than that of the armpit, but also greatly affected by environmental temperature, resulting in significant measurement errors in various existing infrared thermometers. An infrared temperature measurement product with environmental temperature compensation function should be developed, which can accurately convert the armpit temperature based on the forehead temperature and environmental temperature of the human body.


According to relevant experts, in order to prioritize social interests and gather more resources and strength to fight against SARS, the new infrared thermometer can significantly reduce the technical and manufacturing threshold of infrared temperature measurement equipment, while also solving the problems of complete dependence on imported infrared temperature measurement core components, shortage of supply, and high prices in China.


So, what is the technological content of current infrared thermometers? Experts from the China Institute of Metrology Technology said in an interview with reporters that firstly, the measurement accuracy of a thermometer is related to the accuracy and quality of the instrument itself; Secondly, the difference in measurement standards between the calibrated temperature and the measured temperature of the measuring instrument in the laboratory can also easily cause measurement errors; Thirdly, nowadays thermometers only measure the forehead, palms, face, and other parts of the human body, and the measurement results belong to the body surface temperature. However, the body surface temperature may fluctuate due to the influence of human activity status, so it may not truly represent human body temperature.


Experts also revealed that a measurement standard for temperature measuring instruments is currently being revised, which will make relevant provisions for factors such as high measurement errors of the instruments. At the same time, the scientific and technological personnel of the China Institute of Metrology are working overtime to produce the infrared thermometer calibration device recently developed by the institute. The plan is to equip this device for * * 50 ports. This device not only fills the gap in on-site calibration devices for infrared radiation thermometers in China, but also provides accurate calibration for infrared radiation thermometers.
