What is a switching power supply? How does a switching power supply work?

Switching power supply is a power device that converts alternating current into usable direct current. It converts power by using switching elements such as transistors, MOSFETs, or IGBTs in a high-frequency switching manner. Switching power supplies have the characteristics of small size, high efficiency, and strong reliability, and are widely used in various electronic devices such as computers, communication equipment, household appliances, etc.

The working principle of a switching power supply mainly includes two parts: rectification and conversion.
The rectification part converts alternating current into direct current, and there are two commonly used rectification methods: single-phase rectification and three-phase rectification. The single-phase rectification method mainly includes rectifier bridge and pulse width modulation (PWM) control circuit. A rectifier bridge is a bridge rectifier circuit composed of four diodes, used to convert alternating current into direct current. The conduction and non conduction control of the diodes is completed by a PWM control circuit. The PWM control circuit controls the conduction and non conduction time of the diode according to the variation of the output voltage, in order to achieve stable output voltage. The three-phase rectification method is similar to single-phase rectification, but with an additional rectifier bridge and control circuit to achieve rectification of three-phase AC power.

The transformation part is to convert direct current into the required voltage and current. The transformation part is composed of a controller, switch tubes, and output transformers. The controller is mainly a feedback control loop used to detect the output voltage and make corresponding adjustments as needed. As a switching element, the switch tube controls the on/off of the current according to the control signal, achieving stable power output. The output transformer steps up and down the voltage according to the required output voltage ratio, which can be achieved by changing the turns ratio of the coil.

The workflow of a switching power supply is as follows: AC power is first rectified and converted into DC power, then processed by the conversion section for voltage and current, and finally output as the required power supply.

Switching power supplies have many advantages compared to traditional linear power supplies.
Firstly, switch mode power supplies have high efficiency. Traditional linear power sources reduce voltage by converting alternating current into lower voltage, which leads to energy waste. And the switching power supply greatly improves work efficiency and reduces energy waste through the use of switches, especially high-frequency switches.

Secondly, the size of the switch power supply is small. Switching power supplies can achieve a compact design, making them small in size and suitable for applications in various small electronic devices.

Thirdly, the reliability of switch mode power supplies is high. Switching power supplies use modern electronic devices such as MOSFETs and IGBTs, which have high reliability and long lifespan.

Fourthly, the output stability of the switching power supply is good. The switching power supply adopts a feedback control loop, which can adjust the control signal according to the changes in the output voltage, thereby achieving the stability of the output voltage.

In summary, switch mode power supply is an efficient, reliable, and stable power supply device. By using the working principle of rectification and transformation, alternating current is converted into direct current, and stable output voltage and current are achieved. Switching power supplies play an important role in modern electronic devices and gradually replace traditional linear power supplies.
