What types of AC regulated power supplies are there?

Regulated power supplies are generally classified into four main types by model and category: DC regulated power supplies, AC regulated power supplies, inverter-type regulated power supplies and switching regulated power supplies. Though these four types share some similarities in operating modes and working principles, they also differ greatly in many aspects. The following is a detailed introduction to these four categories.

Among them, AC regulated power supplies can be divided into single-phase and three-phase types, as well as contact-type and contactless types. Their common practical classifications are as follows:

Ferroresonant AC Voltage Stabilizer Composed of saturated chokes and matching capacitors, it features constant-voltage volt-ampere characteristics.

Magnetic Amplifier Type AC Voltage Stabilizer It adopts a series connection of magnetic amplifier and autotransformer, and stabilizes output voltage by adjusting the impedance of the magnetic amplifier via electronic circuits.

Sliding-contact AC Voltage Stabilizer It regulates output voltage by adjusting the position of the transformer sliding contact.

Induction Type AC Voltage Stabilizer It stabilizes AC output voltage by changing the phase difference between primary and secondary voltages of the transformer.

Thyristor AC Voltage Stabilizer It uses thyristors as power regulation components, boasting high voltage stability, fast response and zero noise, yet it may cause interference to communication and electronic equipment.

Since the 1980s, three new types of AC regulated power supplies have emerged: compensation-type, digital control step-type and purification-type AC voltage stabilizers. The purification type offers excellent isolation performance and can eliminate spike interference from the power grid.
