How to perform temperature measurement with an infrared thermometer?

To ensure accurate measurements with an infrared thermometer, aim the device at the target object, press the trigger, and read the temperature value on the LCD screen. Maintain a proper distance-to-spot size ratio and observe the field of view. Several important points must be kept in mind when using an infrared thermometer:

Only surface temperatures can be measured. Infrared thermometers cannot detect internal temperatures.

Do not measure through glass. Glass has unique reflection and transmission characteristics that will distort infrared temperature readings.

Measurement through dedicated infrared windows is permissible. Avoid measuring bright or polished metal surfaces, such as stainless steel and aluminum.

Locate hot spots. To identify a hot spot, aim the thermometer at the target and scan vertically across the surface until the hot spot is confirmed.

Be aware of environmental conditions. Steam, dust, smoke and other contaminants can obstruct the optical system and affect measurement accuracy.

Ambient temperature adaptation. If the thermometer is suddenly exposed to an ambient temperature difference of 20 °C or more, allow the device about 20 minutes to acclimatize to the new environment.

Common Applications of General Infrared Thermometers

Non-contact infrared thermometers are widely used in various fields, with the most typical applications listed below:

Automotive industry: diagnosing engine cylinders and heating or cooling systems.

HVAC industry: monitoring air stratification, supply and return air conditions, and furnace operating performance.

Electrical industry: inspecting faulty transformers, electrical panels and wiring connectors.

Food industry: monitoring temperatures during processing, service and storage.

Other fields: extensive use in engineering, on‑site maintenance and equipment renovation.
