Proper Operating Methods and Basic Maintenance Measures for Multimeters
Multimeters are widely used in experimental and practical training as well as the maintenance of instruments and meters. This article introduces the proper operation methods and requirements for multimeters, along with precautions during operation.
Multimeters come in a wide variety of structural designs with different layouts of knobs and switches on the front panel. Therefore, before use, operators must carefully learn and get familiar with the function of each component, and distinguish the measured quantities corresponding to each scale printed on the dial.
Special attention must be paid to proper multimeter operation. The vast majority of multimeter faults are caused by improper operation. In this sense, correct operation serves as the best maintenance measure for a multimeter.
Furthermore, only proper operation can minimize measurement errors. Place the multimeter horizontally before use, and check whether the pointer rests at the zero position. If not, turn the mechanical zero-adjustment screw at the center of the meter to align the pointer with zero. Connect the lead of the red test probe to the red terminal or the jack marked "+", and the lead of the black test probe to the black terminal or the jack marked "−".
Rotate the selector switch to the required position according to the quantity to be measured. For instance, set the switch to the corresponding range for AC voltage measurement. Some multimeters feature separate function selector knobs and range selector knobs. When operating such models, first turn the function selector to match the measured parameter, then adjust the range selector to an appropriate gear. Great care must be taken when selecting the measurement function; incorrect settings may lead to severe consequences.
