The Peak Hold function of a digital multimeter

The "Peak Hold" function of a digital multimeter

The so-called "peak holding" function refers to the digital ability to hold the currently measured peak value on the display screen; In other words, the final reading of the instrument is the maximum value in continuous measurement. This function is very useful. For example, sometimes it is necessary to detect the voltage at a certain point in a "danger zone" (such as densely packed solder joints, where a short circuit between adjacent pins can cause a new fault), and the "peak hold" function can come in handy. The specific detection method is as follows:

Place the digital multimeter in the "PH" state and ignore the instrument display for now. Simply focus on touching the probe securely and reliably with the test point, then release the probe and read calmly.

For some devices that have protection faults upon startup, if you need to know the voltage or current data of the machine at key points during the short startup period, you can use a digital meter placed in the "PH" state to monitor the voltage or current at key points in advance. After the machine protection stops oscillating, you can read the maximum value during this period for analysis.

Precautions for using a digital multimeter
① To adjust the "zero point" (only available on mechanical watches), before using the watch, check that the pointer is pointing to the "zero position" on the left end. If not, slowly turn the "starting point zero position" correction screw in the center of the watch case with a small screwdriver to make the pointer point to the zero position

② When using a multimeter, it should be placed horizontally (only mechanical devices have it)

③ Before testing, it is necessary to determine the measurement content and turn the range conversion knob to the corresponding measurement gear shown to avoid burning the meter head. If the size of the measured physical quantity is unknown, the test should be started from the large range first

④ The probe should be inserted correctly into the corresponding socket

⑤ During the testing process, do not rotate the gear shift knob arbitrarily

⑥ After use, be sure to adjust the gear shift knob of the unused meter to the high range gear of the AC voltage

⑦ When measuring DC voltage and current, attention should be paid to the positive and negative poles of the voltage, the direction of the current, and the correct connection with the probe
