Why are laser rangefinders classified as eye‑safe or non-eye‑safe?
As the name suggests, laser rangefinders operate using laser beams as their core working medium. Currently, mainstream handheld laser rangefinders on the market adopt three primary laser sources: semiconductor lasers with wavelengths of 905 nm and 1540 nm, and YAG lasers at 1064 nm.The 1064 nm laser wavelength poses hazards to human skin and eyes. Accidental eye exposure may result in permanent damage. Consequently, 1064 nm handheld laser rangefinders have been completely banned overseas.
